Fresh, glowing skin serves as the perfect canvas for, quite literally, any beauty look. From a red lip to a smokey eye, a flawless face begins with a good base.

Having a go-to beauty routine tucked up your sleeve is a huge time saver as you can rely on it as an everyday look and as a base for bolder, evening-appropriate makeup.

Five minutes may sound like an impossible time frame, but take my word for it – it can be done! Once you’ve established which products and consistencies work for you, follow this simple routine to look fresh, youthful and well-rested.

Come evening time, you won’t need to reapply your base – just dial up your eyes or amp up your lips and you’re good to go.

45 seconds. Prepare your skin

Priming may seem like an unnecessary step, particularly if you only have five minutes up your sleeve, but this will save you from having to touch up your makeup throughout the day or have to reapply your foundation when creating an evening look.

For makeup that really lasts, opt for a mattifying base with a bit of tack to it and use your fingers to apply – this way, the heat of your body will warm up the product to ensure it glides right over your skin to fill in any pores and smooth out imperfections.

2.5 minutes. Apply your foundation

Dedicate the bulk of your allocated five minutes to really working your foundation into the skin. To save time and get your application looking as fresh and natural as possible, think of your foundation as a wash of colour rather than a mask.

Use a large buffing brush to work the product into your skin, but don’t focus on really hiding any blemishes at this point- that’s what concealer is for.

1 minute. Conceal and brighten

I like using two concealers to create the most flawless base possible – one for blemishes and one to brighten. Brightening concealers are the ones you’ll usually find in a pen form.

Draw this on in two inverted triangles under your eyes, then buff in using your foundation brush to lift your complexion.

I like using a creamy concealer to cover any spots, patting the product in with my fingers to ensure it really melts in to my concealer.

45 seconds. Add some colour

A cream blush or bronzer is worth its weight in gold! You can apply it with your fingers and use it as a hybrid cheek, lip and eye colour.

Look for a formula without shimmer, as anything with shimmer pigments in it will accentuate any fine lines or imperfections.

To save time, I love using a blush on the apples of my cheeks and my lips. I also use a bronzer in the hollows of my cheeks and as a subtle daytime eye colour.

30 seconds. Apply your mascara

Finish your look with a coat or two of mascara to widen and brighten the eye area.

Your five minutes will have reached an end, but this is where I add in a little cheat’s trick. Pop a hydrating setting spray in your handbag to both set your makeup as you head out the door and to refresh your foundation if you’re using this routine as a base for an evening look.
